The race for greater profits is deepening the global crisis. The world economy is sinking into recession and imperialism has destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan.  The “new world order” is being exposed for what it is: A system based on imperialism and the exploitation of billions.

Internationally the war in Georgia has shown the instability of the world system. NATO expansion, driven by US imperialism has spread the carnage from the Middle East into the Caucasus.  It has exposed the limits of the US attempt to use its military might to reshape the region in its interests. Stuck in unwinnable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan there is no easy answer for the US ruling class.

At home the weakness of the economy is beginning to show.  The stability built on increased exploitation of workers and massive levels of debt is unravelling. The credit crunch was only the beginning. With food and energy prices rising people are finding it harder to make ends meet.  Across Europe and the US there is a rising level of working class struggle. This has found its echo in Latin American resistance, Egyptian strike waves and food riots across the world.

Capitalism divides us.  In school, university and work we are told to measure our success against each other and compete for better opportunities and wages. But when a minority control the corporations, companies and nations which dominate our world, ‘equality of opportunity’ is a myth. Capitalism fosters racism, sexism and homophobia to distract from its failure to deliver for billions of people.  Struggles can overcome these divisions by bringing people together against a common enemy.

Our Alternative

The capitalist system is organised through the courts, parliaments, company boards and political parties. We must be organised and active in every movement against it. A system based on exploitation and competition can’t be reformed, it must be overthrown and rebuilt.

SWSS plays a central role in supporting every strike, building the Stop the War Coalition and other united campaigns against fascism, racism, climate change and oppression.  We agitate for socialist ideas and revolutionary strategy.  If we are to build a socialist society we must involve the greatest number of people possible in every struggle for a better world.
